NE Club Cavalry Patrol at Gettysburg
The troops were scheduled to meet at Artillery Ridge at 0930 hours on the morning of May 6th 2007 to be briefed on the three-day battle at Gettysburg. The day started off with a skirmish of lost NE Club soldiers. Our first thought was to send out messengers to round up our battalion but then somebody thought it might make more sense to just use our cell phones. At 1015 hours General Sam Fuson rallied the troops and lead the NE Club Cavalry for a gait into history. Sam shared many interesting facts as we traveled from the Union line into Confederate territory. Our club was fortunate to have our ride on the same day as several re-enactment groups who were also taking part in the history of Gettysburg. Many thanks to Sam and Debbie Fuson for hosting and guiding our ride.

Horse knowledge- -Good Food- -Great Trails. What more could we ask for? It was a beautiful fall day in Spring Valley Park. The leaves were colorful and the weather in the low 70’s...a picture perfect day to learn about why it is so important to have a good equine dentist. The trail ride was super and lunch was great.

Click for a larger imageScott Koehler did an outstanding clinic about horse dentistry. He explained about the importance of properly taking care of our horse’s teeth, what ages they get teeth and lose teeth and why it is so important to have the wolf teeth removed. Scott had a complete horse scull to show us exactly which teeth were which. He explained all the tools and what they are used for. Then we got out Dell, our demonstrator horse. We thank club member Kevin Smith of Parkton, MD for allowing us to use his horse. Dell needed her teeth floated and had wolf teeth that needed removed. We brought Dell up to the pavilion where Scott placed a full mouth speculum on her and we all got to feel in her mouth where the edges were sharp. (This causes pain to the cheek and tongue). Scott Click for a larger image then "floated" her and we all had an opportunity to feel her teeth again. What a difference! I cannot believe anyone with this knowledge would not have their horses teeth floated at least once a year, which is the recommended time frame for horses over the age of four. Prior to four, every six months is the recommended schedule. Scott explained how the teeth come in and that some teeth come in as baby teeth and get replaced with permanent teeth. Then others come in as permanent teeth. Scott then removed Dell’s wolf teeth. Amazing...  right there in front of us with no problem and I might add, no sedation.

A huge Thank You to Scott for giving us this outstanding demonstration. If you are in need of an equine dentist, please give Scott a call 717-235-8944 or 717-578-0081.
